mother of the bride

After the bride and bridesmaids, the mother-of-the-bride is the next to be scrutinised at the wedding so be sure she looks good! The outfit is generally a little more formal and a little more outstanding than those of other female guests.

If the wedding invitation cites semi-formal as the dress style, the mother-of-the-bride should dress appropriately choosing a formal dress, pant or skirt suit. Many mothers choose cream and light colours, but as long as she feels comfortable in it and the style suits her, anything is acceptable. The colour should complement the bridesmaids and highlight her own natural glow. As with most very special occasions, it’s nice to buy a new outfit so she feels extra special.

A number of bridal designers also specialise in mother-of-the-bride fashions, and will readily offer advice on her outfit - especially if you are purchasing your wedding gown from them! Many mother-of-the-brides like to include a hat in their outfit. Hats make an occasion special, and can also make someone look years younger! As for the rest of the wedding party, choose comfortable shoes and jewellery to enhance the outfit, adding a touch of class and elegance.

These points also apply to the other special female figures at your wedding, namely the mother-of-the-groom and any grandmothers you are lucky enough to have attending. Remember that for them, your wedding is one of the highlights of their life so it is important to make them feel and look special too.
